Colmcille 1500

1500 years ago, one of Ireland’s most famous sons was born in Gartan, Co. Donegal. With strong roots in the North West of Ireland, Colmcille (or St. Columba) went on to blaze a trail of cultural and social change around the world. He became one of Ireland’s three patron saints, the patron saint of Derry and his influence extends to this day.

Colmcille 1500 is a year long commemoration to mark the 1500th anniversary of the birth of Colmcille, also known as Columba. Donegal County Council and Derry City & Strabane District Council have come together with support from North West Development Fund, to commemorate Colmcille’s remarkable life and legacy with a series of events and activities throughout the year.

St Columb’s Park House and grounds, with its' significant legacy, is positioned close to important historical sites which were influential for over a thousand years. Originally named Annsmount, the name changed to Chatham, before it finally became St Columb’s Park House, which it continues to be known by today.

The House has been home to some significant characters in the history of the city and beyond, as well as boasting some famous guests such as William Makepace Thackeray (who visited the house in 1842), John S. B. Monsell (who wrote a number of well known Hymns including the world famous song, ‘Fight the Good Fight with all Thy Might’). A former Bishop of Sodar and Mann, Rowley Hill was born at St Columbs in 1836 and mentioned in the song " If You Want a Receipt for That Popular Mystery " 1881, by Gilbert and Sullivan. As a clergyman he conducted services for Queen Victoria in her private chapel at Windsor Castle.

The House was home to many families – however it has typically changed ownership through leasing. The House was seconded for security purposes after the First World War and grounds were then vested by the Londonderry Corporation in 1939 and has since served as a public park. The house was a nurses home in the mid 20th century and in 1995 it was set up as a Peace and Reconciliation Centre and has continued this work up to the present day.
